How I work?

^† A kind visitor reminds me that I forgot to update this section, guilty as charged. Since I got a blog and the space left on this page is quite limited, I decied to share my observations, techniques and experience directly through my blog, which I can edit and update without much fuss. It is easier for you to leave a comment as well. The 1st post is The Tale of Baby No.59's Life and Adventure, which I attached a "How-I-Work" tag. let's hope it's not the first article, and the last too. :D

When I first realize that the word "fractal" means, I felt like I had run into a whole new different world of digital art and I grew quite impatient to give it a try without making my works look as though they're some poor duplicates of others, so I didn't use dark background or fancy, shining patterns that keep whirling & whirling. Instead, I used the composition and shapes to achieve my goal.

Energetic Baby No.4

Is making digital art any easier than traditional art? hart to say, but I have to admit that with the handful tools available in all the graphic designing apps, you need to be more "artistic" and careful to making something that not only impressive but original. With the great palette as the important basis and element in the beginning, No.4 was created following a couple of intentional twists and turns that made the final look full of soothing and smooth moves reflecting every line and the light upon.

Isn't it obvious that I always manage to make the still graphics move in their own way? The movement plays a big part as an essential criteria in my works for that's where the part of the dynamics originates. Consciously I put a bit of Escher in this to make a big wave of illusion and labyrinth.

This is probably one of the most popular pieces of mine. It originated from a simple composition, but I needed the shades, colors and the clean lines to make the image as a whole. Maybe my mind was still affected by Mondrian from time to time then.

Energetic Baby No.80

I always want to make something as a breakthrough (or transition) of what I have been quite familiar with or what have given me great impression for a long time. More textures and casual brushes were adopted in No.80 for  that's how I see the ancient Chinese water-colors -- scattering clouds, infinite hills, waterfalls, and plenty of empty space that gives the picture a divine quality. I put it in my own ways though, blending fractals with pushing & vibrating contrast..

I like the choice of the monotones. The mix of oranges and grays gives the whole piece a nice unity, while you’ve also managed to incorporate a pretty wide array of shades. The way the overlapped pieces affect each others colors adds to the layering as well, which is nice. The black dots fading in and out is a good way to change the color from the actual shade, and the way it’s been used lightly over the whites and more heavily in other places really accentuates the color changes... It’s really cool the way you mixed the angular features of the star with the rounded arcs. I love that you played around so much with shape; it’s the mixture of forms that make the piece really interesting. The two shapes on the top right and bottom left, where the star is cut away in bright orange, are nicely opposed to each other. The hint of repetition in the corner makes the shapes seem even more like a framing for the center and draws the eye inward. - by ProCritique on DeviantArt

I somehow decided to use Orange as a basic element that holds each piece together cause it has soothing and wild character (at least to me) at the same time. As for the name, it has to do with a little cousin who currently lives with my family for a long period of time. Ever since she barely learned how to walk and use her tiny hands, she practically and literally has been tearing everything things apart with those TOOLS she found highly functional -- this is how I learn about the precious experience of raising an energetic kid, who is able of making you feel like if you can handle a little monster like her, you're capable of ruling the whole country. To celebrate (i.e., to erase the painful memories) this experience, I decided to name my first collection as Energetic Baby. Will she come to ruin my computer before I finish the collection? Let's just hope I have time to backup all the files before the perceived tragedy. : ]
